I’ve been frustrated with the look of the site for a while and have been thinking of cleaning it up just haven’t had time.  Look to see some knew ideas tried out this weekend.  Also, if you hit a bad link or an error on the site, please email SuckerPuck@Gmail.com.

Anyone going to the Talbot County tourney?  Sucker Puck might have two teams going, getting final rosters together.

So the formal invites went out today to most of the local rink directors.  Depending on the all out response, we’ll have a lot of new info to post in the next coming weeks.  We’ll also be cleaning up a few other areas of the sites and settling into more of a stride with regular updates and constantly up to date info for each rink.

If you have any suggestions for the site, want to be a part of the Sucker Puck Team, or would like some information posted please contact us at SuckerPuck@gmail.com.

In the meantime we’ll let you know how things go!

First Reponses

So far positive responses from hockey directors in the area.  From a players perspective it will be nice to be able to go to one website and see all the local tournaments, seasonal team and individual fees, pickup sessions and special updates as well as mixed in editorial content.

We’ll have updates for each local rink, as well as general updates.  The first couple directors we’ve spoken with have been more than happy to work with us.  Granted, it’s a free place to put up news about events so it would be kind of stupid not too.  None the less, we’ll be sending out a note to the reamining local directors this weekend.  New content will be popping up in a few weeks, end of the monthish.  All events will be updated on the events calendar (to the right hand side of this) for a quick at a glance.  We’ll also have the new pages up by then.

Cool Site – Hockey Analytics

Alan Ryder has a pretty cool site set up at Hockey Analytics. Basically it seeks to apply meaningful information to compare all players on the same level – defense, offense and netminders.    The site itself is rather bland in layout but works quickly and is pretty interesting if you really want to delve into a players true contribution to their team.

SuckerPuck Newsletter

Ok, so in anticipation of the “relaunch” we’ll be setting up a newsletter.  Similar to Cynopsis, but for DC rec hockey.  It will include special events and games at all the local rinks, any major changes in the hockey program etc.  We’ll also include notes from any local coaches or team captains who are looking for players or subs.  And of course, a few entertainling links in the footer to browse while slacking off at work.

Let us know if there is anything you’d like to see in the newsletter.  Signup form will be added to the sidebar as the newsletter is prepared.

Outreach Begins

Ok, so when this got started, I was hoping it would be to hockey what DCRTV is to local media.  Of course, work and a number of other things have gotten in the way, but now it is getting rounded out to the point where we’re just going to forge on ahead.

We already have the list of normal pickup schedules for all the local rinks.  Now we’re going to be implementing some other new features:

A Rink Rat Report – including local happens at each of the rinks.

Rink in Review – Annual review of each of the local rinks.  Ice condition, staff, etc.

Special Update – Any out of the ordinary happenings at the rinks.

And of course there will be other commentary about all things hockey.  If you have anything to say, let me know.  In the meantime, we’ll be shooting emails over to the head of all the local rinks.

Revamp on the way

Finally got some of the other sites closer to done.  Once they are rounded out, this will be reloaded with more frequently updated content.  Still, surprised at the residual traffic.

A New Fairfax Ice Arena Record!

Not really a record to be proud of – but a record none the less. What is the record you may ask? 206. 206 is now the record for most penalty minutes in a game. I’m not sure if it was the chippy play, or the fact that everytime the refs exhaled it was through their whistles. Whatever the reason, there were a hell of a lot of penalties dished out in last nights Fairfax Ice Arena C2 playoffs.

The total score was 7-6, some of the goals were good plays by the scoring team, and quite a few were bad plays by the defending team. A number of the goals also seemed to be scored while someone was in the goalies lap (or on his head.)

5 players total were ejected from the game, two “fights” (I put it in quotations, as the gloves have to come off for it to be a real fight) which happened concurrently. Anytime the refs start calling a lot of penalties, players get frustrated and it ends up coming out on the ice. No one is holding any grudges, adrenaline runs high, you vent, and you leave it on the ice.

Slacker Says What?

Ok, so it has truly been a while since I posted anything. Been very busy with work, and when not working I am either in transit or (hopefully) playing hockey. There are a number of things I want to do with the site to make it a better resource for people, they are listed below. If you’d like to help, or have any suggestions please let me know.

- Sub Goalie list broken down by location and skill level. (If you’re a goalie who wants on the list let me know, SuckerPuck@gmail.com.

- Other authors to chime in about local leagues and hockey happenings. If you want to share any of your opinions or outlooks, feel free to let me know and I’ll get you signed up.

- Set up a page for upcoming tourneys, so interested parties can discuss creating teams if they find themselves lacking players.

- And this last development is more of a shot at the clouds, but I would still like to develop the auto-reminder system for players and their teams. If that part will ever get done, we’ll see.

Please feel free to participate, send suggestions, criticisms, etc to SuckerPuck@gmail.com or you can chat with me live via the Digsby widget on the right hand side. —>
